The Best Nike Air Max Models to Buy in South Africa Right Now
Air Max has been part of South African street style since the 1990s, and the line has grown large enough to be genuinely confusing. This guide covers the models worth your attention, what each one actually feels like to wear, and where prices currently sit.
Air Max Plus (TN)
Few sneakers carry as much cultural weight locally as the TN. The gradient upper, whale-tail TPU ribs and visible Tuned Air units make it instantly recognisable from across a taxi rank.
The Tuned Air system uses hemispherical pods designed to stabilise the foot rather than simply cushion it, which is why the TN feels firmer underfoot than an Air Max 90. It fits snug through the toe box — most wearers size up half.
The all-black Air Max Plus is currently R1,569, reduced from R3,699.
Air Max 95
The 95 broke the mould by layering the upper in horizontal panels meant to echo human anatomy, and by putting visible Air in the forefoot for the first time. It remains one of the most comfortable models in the line for all-day wear.
It is a heavier shoe than it looks, and the layered upper runs warm in summer. That is a fair trade for the cushioning.
Air Max TL 2.5
A more contemporary interpretation that borrows TN design language with an updated, lighter build. It appeals if you want the aesthetic without the weight. Currently R1,659.
Air Max 90
The default recommendation for a first Air Max. Simple lines, straightforward colourways, and a shape that works with almost anything. Cushioning is modest by modern standards — this is a lifestyle shoe, not a running shoe.
Which should you buy?
- Maximum comfort for long days — Air Max 95
- Strongest street presence — Air Max Plus
- Most versatile with any outfit — Air Max 90
- Lightest on foot — Air Max TL 2.5
A note on sizing
Air Max models are not consistent with each other. The 90 runs close to true to size, the Plus runs snug, and the 95 sits somewhere between. Check our size guide before ordering, and remember that unworn pairs can be returned within 14 days.
