Air Force 1 vs Dunk Low: Which Should You Buy?

Air Force 1 vs Dunk Low: Which Should You Buy?

These two are the most common starting points for a sneaker collection, and they are frequently cross-shopped. They look superficially similar on a shelf. They are quite different on foot.

Origins

The Air Force 1 arrived in 1982 as a basketball shoe — the first to use Nike Air technology. The Dunk followed in 1985, built for college basketball programmes, which is why it launched in team colour blocking. Both were eventually adopted by skate and street culture, and that is where they live today.

Cushioning: the real difference

This is what separates them. The Air Force 1 contains an encapsulated Air unit in the heel. The Dunk Low does not — it uses a standard foam midsole.

In practice the AF1 is noticeably more forgiving if you are on your feet for hours. The Dunk gives you better ground feel and a lower, more connected stance. If you walk a lot, the AF1 is the more comfortable choice.

Weight and profile

The AF1 is the chunkier shoe, with a thicker midsole and a bulkier silhouette. The Dunk sits lower and slimmer. Under a tapered trouser the Dunk looks cleaner; with wider or cargo styling, the AF1 has better proportion.

Fit

The Air Force 1 runs about half a size large — most people size down. The Dunk Low is closer to true to size but snug across the midfoot, which can be uncomfortable on a wide foot for the first few wears.

Durability

The AF1’s tumbled leather hides scuffs well and the thick midsole takes abuse. Dunks often use smoother leather that creases more visibly across the toe box. Neither is fragile, but the AF1 tolerates daily wear better.

Cleaning

The AF1’s perforated toe box traps dust — expect to use a toothbrush on those holes. The Dunk’s flatter panels are quicker to wipe down. See our cleaning guide.

Price in South Africa

Both sit in a similar bracket locally. The Air Force 1 ’07 Women’s is R1,469, and the Dunk Low Women’s is R1,659. Specific colourways move the number more than the model does.

The verdict

Buy the Air Force 1 if you want maximum comfort, a shoe that survives daily wear, and something that works with looser fits.

Buy the Dunk Low if you prefer a slimmer profile, want stronger colour-blocking options, and care more about how it looks than how it feels at hour eight.

If it is your first pair and you are genuinely torn, take the Air Force 1. It is the more forgiving shoe in every sense.
